The first half of the course covers the fundamental principles and concepts of general chemistry blending facts with theory in application, particularly the various fields of students’ interests and generally to the physical world. Emphasis is given to the concepts of atomic composition and structure, periodic table, chemical formula and chemical equation writing and naming of compounds, chemical bonding and stoichiometry. Descriptions and calculations on solutions form part of the concluding topics of the first half.
The second half of the course deals with the properties, nomenclature, and general reactions of the different classes of organic compounds and their basic mechanisms.
Laboratory work is an integral part of the course. This involves the performance of exercises (online or face to face) and mostly virtual experiments which acquaint the students with some of the fundamental chemical laboratory operations as the basic concepts and principles of inorganic and organic chemistry are illustrated.

A comprehensive course covering the fundamental principles and concepts of chemistry
blending fact with theory in application, particularly the various fields of students’ interests and generally to
the physical world. Emphasis is given to the correlation of the present concepts of atomic composition and
structure with the physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds. Chemical descriptions of
different groups of elements and their compounds form the concluding topics of the course.
